The 11th annual Goodfellow Appreciation Day, planned for May 21, and organized by the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, is a free event for active Goodfellow members and families and relies totally on community support.
Approximately 11 years ago, Goodfellow was on a list of base closures around the nation. The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce knew how large an impact GAFB members and their families have on the local economy so, after it was decided that Goodfellow would remain open the Chamber hosted a free picnic for Goodfellow members and their families to show their appreciation to military members.
In the beginning, only a few hundred military personnel attended but within a few years, the event grew into a few thousand active Goodfellow members and their families.
“We want to say thank you to the members of Goodfellow and their families for all that they do. The event is just for active military members and their families but the event is one hundred percent sponsored by community support through sponsorships,” said Laura Lewis, San Angelo Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s event will have a military band from San Antonio playing at the Riverstage, 16 E. Ave. A. People in attendance will receive a wristband for free access to The Bosque and San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. The City’s Municipal Pool is opening early for just military families where access is also free.
Businesses or people who would like to be a part of the event have until Friday to sign up. Up to 200 volunteers are still needed to help with set-up and break-down at the event.
