Throughout the month of February, all babies born at San Angelo Community Medical Center will receive a knitted red hat. The campaign is designed to raise awareness about heart disease and congenital heart defects.
Community is the first hospital in Texas to participate in “Little Hats Big Hearts.” They started the campaign in February since this month is Heart Awareness Month.
According to Dr. Micheal Blanc, cardiologist at Community, one in 1,000 births will be born with a congenital heart defect in the U.S. In Texas, heart disease is the No. 1 killer.
Community has partnered with the American Heart Association and volunteers to bring the program to San Angelo.
Nancy Rink Johsnon was one volunteer who helped knit the hats. With her help and the help of volunteers from around the state, and Louisiana, more than 1,350 hats have been knitted.
