A statement released Thursday by Sandra Pomroy, vice president of San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Operations, about the death of Phil Neighbors stated, “Our hearts are so heavy. Phil was a genuinely kind Christian man. He was the same in all situations with the respect he showed staff, community, family and strangers. I’ve only met a small few of quality individuals of his character in my life time.”
Neighbors served as president/CEO of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce for the last 10 years. The Chamber serves approximately 1,100 local business members but Neighbors’ impact on the community reached beyond his duties at the Chamber.
Neighbors served on the boards of directors of the Howard College-San Angelo Foundation, the San Angelo Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Concho Valley CARES Coalition. He is immediate past-chairman of the Workforce Development Board of the Concho Valley and chaired the Angelo State University Small Business Development Center Advisory Board, as well as the Project Janus Board.
He and his wife, Susan, have a son who is a graduate of Texas Tech University, and a daughter and son-in-law, who graduated from Angelo State University and live in San Angelo with their four children.
The Neighbors are members of Southland Baptist Church where he worked with college and career young adults and he served as a deacon.
Neighbors died Wednesday, Feb. 3. The Chamber is still waiting to hear final funeral arrangements.
