Austin man kills stepmom for allegedly gloating about Cowboys win

A 20-year-old Austin man is behind bars after authorities say he stabbed his stepmother to death because he felt she was “gloating” about the Dallas Cowboys’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday.

A press release from the Austin Police Department said at approximately 10:39 p.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to an apartment complex at 2713 S. Congress Ave. Officers found Magdalena Ruiz with multiple stab wounds to the chest. They began first aid until EMS arrived and took over rescue efforts. Ruiz was transported to South Austin Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Austin homicide detectives learned that Ruiz and her husband, Pontrey Simon, were sitting on the couch watching television. Also present was Simon’s son, Pontrey O’Neal Jones. Without explanation, the APD said Jones walked behind the couch, lunged over Ruiz and stabbed her multiple times. Simon intervened to stop the attack.

Jones then fled the apartment and was located about 10 minutes later lying naked in the grass in the 2400 block of South Congress Avenue.

On Dec. 19, an autopsy was performed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office and the manner of death was ruled homicide.

Homicide detectives have charged Pontrey Jones with murder, a first-degree felony. Bond was set at $500,000.
