James Reid has been named as Angelo State University’s new director of athletics, effective Tuesday. The announcement was made by Dr. Brian May, president of ASU, Tuesday morning.
Reid has been the interim director of athletics since May 2015. He’s led both the men’s and women’s track and field programs since 1995 and was the assistant director of athletics from 2007 to 2015.
His track and field teams have landed in the to three spots in each Lone Star Conference championship and his record includes an LSC title for the Rams and eight for the Rambelles. The Rambelles snagged their first-ever title in 2014.
In 2010, under Reid’s guidance, the Rambelles earned the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championship that included two individual titles, one relay national title, 12 individual All-American performances, two All-American performances, two All-American relay teams and the NCAA D-II National Female Field Athlete of the Year.
Additionally, the Rambelles placed in the Top 20 at the NCAA D-11 Indoor National Championships in 2012-2016.
Among Reid’s personal achievements are being named twice as the NCAA D-II National Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year; the NCAA D-II South Central Region Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2004, 2009-2010; U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Regional Coach of the Year in 2016; LSC Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2001; and the LSC Women’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2003-2005 and 2007-2014.
Reid is a 1991 undergraduate of Angelo State University and received his master’s degree in education in 1993.
