ASU grads to walk the stage May 14


Approximately 850 students are scheduled to graduate during Angelo State University’s spring commencement ceremonies May 14, at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, 2235 S. Jackson St.

Graduates of the College of Education and Archer College of Health and Human Services will walk the stage during a 10 a.m. ceremony. Graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Business will walk the stage in a 2 p.m. ceremony.

During Saturday’s commencement, 23 doctoral degrees, 233 master’s degrees and 594 bachelor’s degrees are scheduled to be presented. Graduate students will earn 23 doctor of physical therapy, 28 master of arts, five master of professional accountancy, five master of business administration, 106 master of education, 58 master of science, 18 master of science in nursing and 13 master of security studies degrees.

Undergraduates will receive 100 bachelor of arts, one bachelor of applied arts and sciences, 94 bachelor of business administration, eight bachelor of fine arts, 31 bachelor of interdisciplinary studies, four bachelor of intelligence, security studies and analysis, two bachelor of music, 262 bachelor of science, 47 bachelor of science in nursing, seven bachelor of security studies and 38 bachelor of social work degrees.

Commencement speaker will be ASU alum Cuong T. Nguyen, CEO of Ellacy Global Trade and Investment in Washington, D.C.

A 1996 ASU graduate, Nguyen received his Air Force commission through ASU’s ROTC program and spent almost 20 years working on some of the military’s most advanced defense, weapons, cyber-security, strategic planning and personnel initiatives. He became CEO of Ellacy Global in 2015, and in that capacity, recently hosted an ASU delegation in Vietnam and helped set up a series of programs and agreements that will bring increasing numbers of Vietnamese students to the ASU campus in the coming years.

Ceremonies highlight three days of graduation-related events on ASU’s campus. On May 12, the physical therapy department will conduct its annual awards banquet at 6 p.m. at the LeGrand Alumni and Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave. Various student awards, including those for Academic Excellence, Research Excellence and Clinical Excellence, will be distributed, as well as several faculty awards. Graduating students will also receive their official white coats to take with them as they become professional therapists.

On May 13, the Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 will conduct its spring commissioning ceremony for four graduating cadets at 9 a.m. in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Retired Lt. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins Jr. will be the guest speaker and cadets will receive their appointments as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force.

At 5 p.m. Friday, the social work program will conduct its annual pinning ceremony for its graduates in the Houston Harte University Center. At 8:30 p.m., the nursing department will conduct its annual pinning ceremony in the Houston Harte University Center.

OnSaturday, the ASU College of Business will also host a reception for its graduates starting immediately after the 2 p.m. commencement ceremony in Room 254 of the Junell Center/Stephens Arena. Refreshments and photo opportunities will be available.
