Armed Forces Day is the day to thank active military for their service

May 21 is Armed Forces Day in the United States. It is held each third Saturday of May. According to the Department of Defense, President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank military members for their patriotic service in support of the United States.

On Aug. 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the DOD.

Locally, events are being held Saturday in San Angelo, including Goodfellow Appreciation Day (hosted by the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce) and free admission for military (active and retired) to Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, The Bosque and Love Municipal Pool.
