Defendant Anthony Walters was found not guilty by a jury in the 391st District Court late Wednesday night.
Walters was accused of deadly conduct associated with shots fired at Desiree’s Nightclub in March 2014. According to court documents, a person who was with Walters on the night of the incident told police that Walters fired several rounds from a handgun when the two were leaving Desiree’s parking lot.
State attorneys Richard Villarreal and Dana Nolen worked to prove that Walters committed the the crime over a three-day trial, but defense attorneys Evan Pierce-Jones and Todd Simons slowly picked apart the evidence presented against Walters. The defense pointed out that San Angelo Police Department crime scene investigators did not fingerprint shell casings collected at the scene. While the investigator was on the stand, she told the court she did not collect additional evidence at the scene because she did not have permission to do so.
Jurors began deliberating at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday and returned with a unanimous verdict of not guilty at 9:45 p.m.
