The Abilene Zoo set an all-time record for annual attendance with more than 249,600 guests visiting the zoo in 2016, bringing about 33,000 more guests than the previous year.
Zoo Director Bill Gersonde said the zoo was able to break such a record during the rainiest years in recent memory.
“Zoo attendance is always affected by weather days, but we’ve enjoyed our rain-drenched gardens while entertaining excellent crowds,”Gersonde said.
According to the press release, with the opening of the Giraffe Safari in late April, it acted as a driving force for visitors along with several celebrations as the zoo celebrated 50th anniversary.
More than half of zoo guests came from other cities throughout the state, and more than 2,500 families joined the zoo’s membership club as frequent visitors.
