A 49-year old El Paso man was killed early Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle collision three miles west of Orla on RM 652 in Reeves County.
According to a release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Charlie Hardy, the driver of a 2006 Peter built, Model 379 (TTST) Tank with crude oil, was killed. Hardy was traveling eastbound on RM 652. A 2014 Mack, TTST (Tank with water), driven by 50-year old Urquiola Antonio Gusto of Hobbs, New Mexico, was traveling westbound.
A preliminary investigation found that Hardy appeared to have fallen asleep and drifted in the westbound lane. Gusto attempted to take evasive action, but both vehicles collided.
Hardy was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Heriberto Rodriguez. It is not known if he was wearing a seatbelt.
Gusto, who was wearing his seatbelt, was transported to the Reeves County Hospital with non-incapacitating injuries. He was treated and released.
Reeves and Ward County Highway Patrol troopers investigated the incident. No further information is available.
