39 dead after New Year’s attack in Istanbul

An gunman reported as dressed in a Santa Claus costume opened fire early Sunday morning at a crowded nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey during a New Year’s Eve celebration, killing at least 39 people and wounding dozens of others.

As reported by USA TODAY, the province’s governor described the incident as a terror attack.

“Unfortunately, [he] rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year’s and have fun,” Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin said.

Authorities believe the attacker left a gun inside the venue and escaped by taking advantage of the crowded chaos in the club.

They are now searching for the shooter. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
