Performance one of the San Angelo Rodeo began with a somber moment for those who knew and loved San Angelo Police Department Sgt. Korby Kennedy. PRCA announcer Boyd Polhamus paid tribute to Kennedy as ceremonies began. “While he wasn’t killed by a gun or a bad guy, he died in a violent way.” Polhamus said.

Kennedy’s family was in the audience Friday night for the performance.

“Korby loved this rodeo and this rodeo loved Korby.”

Polhamus went on to ask the rodeo audience when the last time they had thanked someone who took an oath to serve and protect, as the spotlight was focused on members of the San Angelo Police Department, the San Angelo Fire Department and the Tom Green Sheriff’s Department.

And then all eyes were on the bullrider’s chute, where 29-year old Jeff Fisher from the SAPD rode a bull out of the chute. He didn’t last eight seconds, but the crowd was too busy cheering to notice.

Cue the lights and the rodeo performance kicked off with bareback riding. A high score of 84 1/2 took it for  Mason Clements from Sandy, Utah.

Steer wrestlers came next, coming out of the gates all trying to beat each other’s times. Team ropers followed, and then the saddle bronc riders came blasting out of the gates at Foster Communications Coliseum.

Rounding out the night were tie-down roping, barrel racing and crowd favorite bull-riding.

Barrel man/specialty act Justin Rumford entertained spectators with jokes and a few acrobatic feats.
