16 dead in fiery hot air balloon crash in Lockhart

Sixteen people aboard a hot air balloon Saturday, have been confirmed dead by the Texas Department of Public Safety, after it caught fire and crashed in Lockhart.


A 9-1-1 call was received by the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office about a possible vehicle accident, the sheriff’s department and emergency responders responded to the call located in the Maxwell area.

Sheriff Daniel Law said, when the emergency responders and sheriff’s office arrived on the scene it was apparent that reported fire was a basket portion of a hot air balloon; DPS was notified and secured the scene.

No survivors have appeared to survive the the crash and investigators are determining the number and identities of the victims at this time.
