1 killed, 1 hurt in single-engine plane crash in East Texas

GILMER, Texas (AP) — An East Texas pilot has been killed and his wife critically hurt when their single-engine plane crashed into some woods.

Emergency personnel around midnight Tuesday located the wreckage of the Cessna 172 in a field near Gilmer.

The plane took off from Sulphur Springs Municipal Airport earlier Tuesday. Relatives of the couple contacted authorities when the plane failed to arrive as scheduled at Fox Stephens Field-Gilmer Municipal Airport.

Upshur County Justice of the Peace Rhonda Welch says 73-year-old Samuel Oliver Lucky of Gladewater was dead at the scene. He’s the registered owner of the aircraft. His wife, 57-year-old Pamela Rickman Lucky, was in critical condition Wednesday at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the crash. Cellphone data helped pinpoint the accident site.
