CBP officers arrest alien smuggler in El Paso

Cargo and passenger vehicle traffic made their way across the Bridge of the Americas noon Tuesday.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers and working at the El Paso port of entry arrested a truck driver after discovering a person hiding in the truck he was driving. The passenger was also taken into custody.

“We experience some alien smuggling cases in our commercial lots, but CBP officers continue to be diligent in carrying out their duties as demonstrated in this case,” said Severiano Solis, acting CBP El Paso Port Director. “CBP’s layered enforcement proved vital in making this discovery and subsequent arrest.”

The apprehension occurred just before noon Tuesday when a 2010 Freightliner truck applied for entry at the Bridge of the Americas cargo facility. A CBP officer selected the vehicle for an x-ray exam. A scan of the unit revealed an anomaly in the appearance of the sleeper cabin. CBP officers searched the vehicle and discovered a female hiding in the sleeper. The subject was a citizen of Mexico who did not possess appropriate entry documents.

Both the driver and passenger were arrested by a CBP enforcement officer and booked into the El Paso County Jail. The driver, a 45-year-old citizen of Mexico, is facing alien smuggling charges. The passenger, a 45-year-old citizen of Mexico, is facing illegal entry charges.
